I can’t help myself; I like the books that make me shiver and sweat all at once, and K. L. Slater’s The Lucky Winners delivered just that. It’s a psychological thriller that turns a dream home into a nightmare. Those floor-to-ceiling glass windows don’t just provide a stunning view out—they provide a disturbing view in.

The story follows Merri and Dev, whose lives change overnight when they win a luxury mansion in the Lake District. But the win draws unwanted attention. Merri has been carrying a secret for years, and those glass windows put everything on display, providing the perfect magnifying glass for The Watcher. Merri and Dev are desperate to make friends in their new life, but Slater is brilliant at making suspects of everyone; the characters are as unpredictable as the changing weather.

So what kept me reading until the early hours? Partly, it was the short chapters; they hold a real sense of urgency, with tension stretching across the pages like an unsteady bridge. I wanted to walk it, yet I wanted to close my eyes with every step. I found myself second-guessing the identity of ‘The Watcher’ several times before the final reveal caught me completely off guard.

Slater adds more planks to the bridge by using the weather to her advantage. The tension stirs, shifts, trembles, and whispers; it’s blown around like leaves, spreading and falling out of the pages. Then suddenly, the leaves no longer rustle and whisper their warning. The air grows heavy, closing in around them until all your senses are screaming: ‘something is about to happen.’

The verdict

If you’re a fan of Lisa Jewell’s tangled family webs like The Family Upstairs or Gillian McAllister’s race-against-time tension, The Lucky Winners is a must-read. It’s perfect for readers who love a good nail-biter where the setting is just as threatening as the villain.

This is a book for anyone who has ever dreamed of a ‘big win,’ only to realise that some prizes come with a heavy price tag. If you want a story that makes you double-check your locks and wonder who is really watching through the glass, put this at the top of your TBR pile.
